Today is St. Patrick’s Day—a day filled with Irish pride and, hopefully, good luck for anyone who wants or needs it. People will wear green, some will enjoy a corned beef sandwich, and many will toss back a few pints of Guinness or some green beer.

There will also be blessings aplenty. Irish culture is rich with blessings, many of which start with the verb “may,” expressing possibility, wishes, or hope for the recipient. Among my favorites are:

  • “May your troubles be less and your blessings be more, and nothing but happiness come through your door.”
  • “May your home always be too small to hold all your friends.”
  • “May the friendships you make be those which endure, and all of your grey clouds be small ones for sure.”
  • “May God grant you many years to live, for surely He must be knowing, the earth has angels all too few and heaven is overflowing.”
  • “May the best day of your past be the worst day of your future.”
  • “May the good Lord take a liking to you—but not too soon!”
  • “May you live as long as you want and never want as long as you live.”

I wish all of you the best of luck as we march into what will hopefully be a robust and plentiful spring market. And in my most authentic Irish voice, here’s my Carp’s Corner blessing for you:

“May the relationships you build be deep and strong, may the problems you must solve be easy and few; and may the fun you have be exciting and plentiful—bringing you a client or two.”
