You, Inc.
That’s where most of you work.
Sure, you might have a brokerage where you hang your license, but you don’t work for that broker—you work with them. You might have an office where you conduct business or take pride in representing your brand’s colors and logo, but the majority of Realtors are independent contractors. As independent contractors, we aren’t employees, so we aren’t bound by specific rules or guidelines for how to do our jobs.
You oversee the marketing for your business—deciding how to maximize exposure for your listings and how to present yourself to your customers, clients, and community. You’re in charge of the systems and processes that guide a transaction from contract to close. You are your own chief financial officer, making decisions on how and where to spend and invest your money, hoping to provide a positive return and become profitable.
All of these roles are important but perhaps the most important role a good Realtor must assume is “President” of his or her business.
As President of your business, being a decisive leader is a major factor in a future that will be a success. Being a good listener and surrounding yourself with smart, confident, and competent people in your “cabinet” is a great way to help achieve your goals. These cabinet members could be peers, mentors, coaches, or even your affiliate partners. Staying focused on your constituents—your sphere of influence and clients—is critical to maintaining their support and staying top of mind. This ensures repeat and referral business moving forward.
Your ‘term’ as President of your business will thrive if built on a foundation of integrity, ethics, and an enthusiasm for daily activities that draws people to you. Leverage social media and other branding opportunities to share your story and make it so good that others will want to share it as well. Believe in your platform that you proudly promote to “voters” (i.e. Buyers and Sellers), and make your campaign slogans memorable and your promises something you can deliver on.
Serving as the ‘President’ of your business is not just a responsibility—it’s a tremendous opportunity. You don’t have to wait for the next Election Day, you just need to show up each day ready to build relationships, solve problems, and have fun.
That’s a surefire way to earn future ‘votes’ and ensure you remain in office for as long as you’re ready to serve.
Hail to the Chief!
