Happy Birthday, David Lee!

Today is David Lee’s 41st birthday.

You’re most likely asking yourself who the heck is David Lee, right?

As I was seeking a topic for this week’s Carp’s Corner (like I often do on Sunday nights when the blog needs to be published to hit your Inbox for the Monday Morning Match), I often look for famous events or birthdays coming up this week. Sometimes a movie star, author, politician or some other well-known figure will show up on the list and it’ll inspire an idea or story that might work well for this blog.

Now, I know you’re saying to yourself, “that’s great, Sean,…but who the heck is David Lee and what does he have to do with building relationships, solving problems, and having fun?

So here’s who David Lee is; He’s a former NBA All-Star and University of Florida basketball player. He was one of the nations top recruits out of St. Louis and played for the Gators from 2001-2005. If you aren’t a Florida Gators fan, you most likely don’t know who David Lee is, but if you’re like me, you know he was an integral part of the Florida basketball teams that helped get the program ready to win back-to-back National Championships in 2006 & 2007.

” He’s the best rebounder I’ve coached since I’ve been here.”
– Billy Donovan, Orlando Sentinel, January 28, 2003

Are You Someone’s David Lee?

There are over 6,000 colleges or universities in the United States. There are a little less than 20,000 young men playing college basketball each season. There are over 355,000,000 people in the United States. Many of those people don’t know who David Lee is.

But I do…as do many of the 450,000+ University of Florida Alumni Association members, not to mention the people from St Louis that watched David Lee become a nationally recruited player, or the fans of the teams Lee played for such as the Knicks, Celtics, Mavericks, and Spurs. Oh yeah, David Lee also was on the 2015 Golden State Warriors team that won an NBA National Championship.

99.9999%

Let’s just say that 99.99% of the American population don’t know who David Lee is. That’s okay, because that means that 35,500 people do know who he is.

You don’t need to be a nationally recruited athlete. You don’t need to attend a major university. You don’t need to make it to the NBA or win a World Championship.

Just imagine if 99.999% of the people in the US didn’t know who you were? In fact, it’s probably very likely that 99.9999% of the US population doesn’t know who you are.

But just think, if only 3,550 people knew your name, imagine the business you might generate.

Heck, it’s not unrealistic to think that 99.9999% of people in the US don’t know you by your name. If the .0001% knew when your birthday was, or where you worked, or knew you by name, what might happen to your business? If 355 people knew who you were, what you did, and were willing to tell other people about you, could your business grow?

Stop worrying about being an All American or a World Champion. Be good enough for just one person to see or know how good you are.

Once one person notices, then another does.

Then another.

Then another.

High school star turns into college star. College star gets drafted and becomes a pro. Pro works hard enough and long enough to earn a World Championship ring.

Imagine the levels of success you might achieve if you just get to the 99.9999%?
