81 years ago today*, Johnny Allen Hendrix was born in Seattle, Washington. You might know him better as “Jimi.”
Widely regarded as one of the greatest and most influential electric guitarists in the history of popular music, Jimi Hendrix didn’t have a long career in the music industry, producing 3 studio albums and one live record before his untimely death at the young age of 27. His first, and arguably best, studio album was titled Are You Experienced and included hits “Purple Haze,” “Hey Joe, ” and “Foxey Lady.”
Hendrix started playing the guitar at age 15 and in his short 12-year playing career would become, as the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame called him, “arguably the greatest instrumentalist in the history of rock music.”
It’s a great reminder that even the greatest have to start somewhere. Jimi didn’t begin his musical career as an experienced expert guitarist but through practice and many, many years of being on stage, he elevated his skills and talents to become a rock legend.
Just like Hendrix in his early days with a guitar in his hand, many Realtors just haven’t had enough practice and opportunities to work with Buyers and Sellers to learn the scripts, dialogues, and tricks of the trade that show they’ve got the competence and confidence to earn the trust of customers and clients. So what can you say when someone asks you how long you’ve been licensed or, to put it in Jimi’s words, “Are you experienced“?
Simply stand up straight, puff out your chest, look the person asking in the eyes, and confidently answer how long you’ve been licensed (without any embellishment) and then follow that with,
“You see there aren’t really new or experienced Realtors. There are active and passive Realtors. I, Mr. Seller/Buyer, am an active Realtor which means if you decide to work with me today, I will immediately begin working hard to help you accomplish your goals.
I will not be waiting for things to happen. I will be making things happen.”
Each and every time you can overcome that question or objection to your tenure or experience in the industry, you have another chance to make it so the question never gets asked.
The customers and clients will know they are in for a good experience thanks to your experience.
