Lots of people think that if they time block their day that they will be more successful.
Schedule every activity and task into your day so that you can account for every 15 or 30-minute increment. It sounds good in theory but in real life, real estate just doesn’t work that way.
I’ve always said the cool thing about a career in real estate is it’s different every day and, at the same time, the bad thing about a career in real estate is it’s different every day. So how could you possibly schedule out your day in 30-minute increments?
Buyers don’t always wait to fit into your schedule.
Sellers often think their issues are urgent AND important and need immediate attention.
It’s unlikely that your kid’s school activities, sporting events, or illnesses will just fit perfectly into their pre-determined slots.
If you have never run a business using a strict, regimented schedule, what makes you think you’ll suddenly start now?
One Day at a Time
Here’s something everyone reading this could do; start “Day Blocking.”
Identify 5 tasks or activities that you could commit to during the week and tackle one of them each day. Here are some examples…
Market Update Mondays – Commit to calling every one of your current Sellers and update them on their neighborhood and competition. Connect with every buyer and let them know what happened over the weekend and about any new listings that might have hit the MLS.
Testimonial Tuesdays – Post a client testimonial on social media. The great thing about most testimonials is they are evergreen and don’t really have an “expiration date.”
What’s Up Wednesdays – Share a market update with your prospects, past clients, or social media followers. Or connect with your favorite lenders and make sure you have a finger on the pulse of rates.
Thank You Note Thursdays – No explanation needed but then again, most hand-written notes or thank you notes don’t really need a reason.
Face to Face Fridays – Whether it’s a breakfast meet-up, a coffee, a lunch, or a happy hour, end your week with an #OnPurpose appointment with someone from your bullseye, clients, or sphere. You don’t have to have business in mind, but as usual, the topic of real estate will usually come up in a conversation.
You don’t have to be as focused on the weekends but you certainly could be. Saturdays or for Sports? Spiritual Sundays? “Welcome to My Open House” Weekends? (Ah yes, alliteration is awesome…but not required).
So what can you come up with for your scheduled activity each day? What’s one thing that, no matter how hectic and crazy your day might become, you could commit to knowing it will help you get closer to a new client, contract, closing…or commission check?
And if for some reason you don’t get your daily thing done by the end of the day, make sure you do your next day’s activity on the next day. You can always add it to your list if you have time.
This is kind of funny because, when you “Day Block,” you usually seem to have a little more time than you thought you would.
