Today would be John Hancock’s birthday. Hancock served as the Governor of Massachusetts from 1780 to 1785 but perhaps is best known as the President of the Second Continental Congress that helped draft the Declaration of Independence. Hancock would be the first of 56 signatures on the document that helped birth the United States of America in 1776.

These days, when someone asks you for your “John Hancock”, they are asking for your signature.

Writing your name.

Leaving your unique mark on a document or page.

For some people, it’s a quick scribble. Others with beautiful penmanship seamlessly write out every letter.

Many people ask famous people for their “autographs” all the time as a way to show other people that they were in the presence of greatness…or at least someone others might know.

Are you collecting signatures?

No, I’m not talking about autographs of rock stars, politicians, or Hall of Fame athletes. I mean how many signatures have you collected today?

A new Buyer signing a Buyer Representation form means you’re that much closer to a closing.

An active Buyer signing a purchase offer means you’re that much closer to a closing.

A Seller signing a listing agreement means you’re that much closer to a closing.

A Seller signing an acceptable purchase offer means you’re that much closer to a closing.

A price reduction form?

A request to remedy?

A referral agreement?

It turns out that those who focus on getting something signed every single day will have a much better chance of earning a paycheck down the road.

And that’s something we all love to put our John Hancock on.
