I was checking out the results from a golf tournament this weekend. At one end of the leaderboard are the players who played their best, topped by the winner of the tournament. At the other end of the results are those players that didn’t have a good showing. They didn’t compete anywhere close to where they probably think they should have.

It’s never good to be the lowest name on the scoreboard in golf because that means you shot the highest score (in relation to par). The winner was the lowest score, usually a result that is under par.

Of course, the lowest names on the list, even lower than the highest score, are those players who have letters next to their names instead of numbers; WD or DNF.

When a golfer ‘withdraws” (WD) from a tournament, there are many reasons, but usually, it’s because of an injury or sometimes something beyond the golf course such as a family emergency. If you see the dreaded DNF next to a golfer’s name, it means he/she “did not finish.” That’s a nice way of saying they gave up and quit. They were so embarrassed (or disgusted with their performance) they either stopped before the round was over or they sometimes just refused to turn in their scorecards.

What Did You Shoot?

What if there was a golf scorecard in real estate? Of course, we’d all be trying to make the best score possible in relation to what we are measuring. Maybe it’s listings, or sales, or appointments, or closed deals. However you’re keeping score, you definitely want to avoid the WD and DNF on your scorecard.

WD – Without Direction

DNF – Does Not Focus

Are you sometimes finding ways to stay busy but just not getting things done? Do you find yourself spending the entire day in your real estate office…among other Realtors and not out with clients or potential clients?

Are you using a “to-do list” and then actively prioritizing the items on your list based on which tasks have the best chance to get you closer to a closing?

Do you open your CRM each day and use it as a roadmap through your relationships, making sure you’re staying top of mind with the best people?

Do you have clear, specific goals for what you need to do between now and the end of the year?

Today is a fresh week. Sharpen that little pencil they give you at the golf course and get ready to write in a winning score at the end. If you can build relationships, solve problems, and have fun like you know you can, there won’t be any reason to even consider a WD or a DNF showing up on the scoreboard.
