I was away from home last week. I spent five days in San Antonio, Texas speaking, sharing, and doing a little sightseeing in some of the communities around the 7th largest city in the United States. It was an amazing few days getting to meet new friends, deepen some relationships, and hopefully impact a few people with some ideas, information, and inspiration.
It was fun to be “back on the road” again doing some speaking events. It’s something I have become very passionate about and there is nothing like the feel and energy of a “live studio audience.” Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and Facebook LIVE have been tremendous tools over the last 15 months to reach a large, sheltered audience but there is just nothing like being a room full of people who are there to listen, learn, and hopefully, become better.
After a long day of travel, I finally pulled into my driveway a little after midnight. I gave Callie the Puppy a big hug and quietly slipped into bed. I had an early morning tee time with my daughter for the Parent-Child Tournament at our golf course the next morning so it wasn’t long before I was off to sleep. Now that I’ve been home for a few days, it’s all back to normal; I had showings both of the last two days, negotiated a successful contract for sellers of mine (managing 7 offers on their home), mowed the lawn, and even washed my car. Okay, I also relaxed and watched some golf and baseball, too.
It’s Good to Be Home
After a long trip, it’s just good to be home, isn’t it? Your own bed. Your own shower. Your clothes in a dresser or hanging in a closet, not crumpled up in a suitcase. Your family nearby. Driving around town without a map or having to search Yelp! for your next meal.
The great reminder is no matter how hard you work each day, what you do to fill your time, or who you spend it with, there’s something awesome about having a place to come home to. Each day when I pull into my driveway and hit that garage door opener, I know I am coming into a place I know and love. It’s a place I feel safe. It’s a place I find comfort.
It’s also a great reminder that in a career like real estate, it’s a huge responsibility and opportunity to help our customers, clients, and communities find and enjoy a place they call home too. It’s why we should listen more than talk. It’s why we need to earn attention and trust and have the patience to let them both develop. It’s why each day being different is both a challenge and a blessing.
It’s exactly why we build relationships, solve problems, and have fun.
Now, I better start packing my stuff. It won’t be long before my next trip.
