It’s easier to play a video game the more you play it and it’s not hard to figure out the plot of a movie the second time you’ve watched it. They say it’s easy to have “20/20 vision” when you’re looking backward because you already know what happened. Looking back at 2020, many of might wish we were blind and didn’t have to look back on some of the things we saw.

“20/20 vision is a term used to express normal visual acuity (the clarity or sharpness of vision) measured at a distance of 20 feet. If you have 20/20 vision, you can see clearly at 20 feet what should normally be seen at that distance. If you have 20/100 vision, it means that you must be as close as 20 feet to see what a person with normal vision can see at 100 feet.”

Clearly this year was one that we can probably look at again and again and still not really know what the heck happened or how we could have gotten through it better than we did, but get through it we did. We made it to the end of the year, surviving many obstacles and challenges but knowing the alternative would be not being here now to read this, I’d say we did okay. Winston Churchill once said, “the farther backward you can look, the farther forward you are likely to see.”

So, looking back on 2020, what did you see?

What will you learn about yourself and your business? The tools you learned how to leverage or broken techniques that just didn’t work anymore. What changes do you need to make?

Where can you double down and invest in your business? How can you better manage your time, take advantage of technology, and better serve your customers, clients, and communities?

Who do you need to spend more time with to get encouragement, ideas, and inspiration and who are those energy-sucking, negative nincompoops that you’ll avoid at all costs?

“Vision is the art of seeing the invisible”

Jonathan Swift

It wasn’t easy. There was plenty of sadness and anguish, challenging moments and times we wanted to give up. There were also times that probably made you laugh until you cried, moments of pride and excitement, and opportunities and moments that you’ll never trade away. Through the ups and the downs, we persevered and somehow remained standing as the calendar is ready to turn anew.

Let’s finish the job we started this year and expect that things probably won’t ever be easy, but if we stay focused on the things we can control and surround ourselves with the right people along our journey, we can continue to do what we do best; build relationships, solve problems, and have fun.
