Quick, name a white whale?

Did you say “Moby Dick”? I’ll bet you did because whether you have read the famous book that American writer Herman Melville wrote almost 170 years or not, it is a classic story that people have heard. Melville died on this date in 1891 yet the story he wrote still is remembered centuries later.

Ahab, the Captain of the Pequod, and his crew of whalers hunt for the elusive white sperm whale, his nemesis which caused him to lose a leg in a previous encounter. The book spins a tale that many students read in middle school or high school and there aren’t many who have at least heard of the tale of Moby Dick.

Do People Know Your Story?

A tagline or slogan can certainly help, as will being associated with a recognizable logo or brand. Providing excellent customer service is another critical element of your business but even more than that, what are you doing to deliver a memorable experience.

In an industry like real estate where there are over 1.4 million members of the National Association of Realtors, you’ve got to make sure you’re not just one of the millions. You literally need to become “one in a million.”

How will you be remembered by your clients after a successful transaction? What can you do to be heard above the noise in today’s hectic world? Where will you “show up” so you suddenly appear in people’s minds when they think about real estate?

You can begin working today on writing a great story. Surround yourself with a great cast of characters. Paint the picture of what you do and the community you serve in every marketing piece, video, or social post you create. Be consistent and write a story that you can tell over and over and over again. Before you know it, other people will be telling your story for you.

It may not be a classic yet, but if you keep building relationships, solving problems, and having fun, years from now, you just might be on the “must-read” list of the next generation.
