Monday Morning Match is a simple post – maybe a quote, inspirational story or idea – intended to spark some motivation inside each of you so your week gets off to a fantastic start on Monday morning.

Whatever advice you give, be brief

Horace

Yesterday, July 12th, was National Simplicity Day. I’m not sure who is the founder of the celebration but I’m guessing there must be a simple explanation behind it, huh? When I discovered this little-known fact, I took to Facebook to pose a very simple question…

As of the posting of today’s Monday Morning Match, I had received over 125 nuggets of wisdom from my friends. Some of the advice was cliche answers while others seemed very personal and unique. There’s a proverb that says “Never give advice unless asked,” but I did ask, so I thought I’d share some of the most common answers and a few of my favorites. Now there’s a fine line between giving advice and giving a lecture, so to make sure that the advice shared falls under the bounds of “simplicity,” I only chose answers that were 10 words or less.

By far the most common advice shared was “be kind.” Other wisdom that was mentioned multiple times was “be nice,” “think before you speak,” and simply “love.” Here are a few more that stood out to me…

“Be okay with Plan B.” Heather O

“Love everyone, unconditionally.” – Michael J.

“Talk less, smile more.” – Barbara S.

“Wear sunblock.” – Amanda E.

“Everyday, find something to count your blessings for.” – Eric M.

“Don’t make a permanent decision based on temporary feelings” – Noah S.

“Be kind to unkind people; They need it the most.” – Corrine W.

“Express sincere concern.” – Dan S.

“Tell the people that you love that you love them.” – Jess A.

“Only worry about things you have control over.” – Todd M via Leigh M.

“No” is a complete sentence.” – Amy C.

“It’s not what you make, it’s what you save.” – Jeffrey B.

“You can’t be wrong by doing right.” – Paul J.

“There’s a nice way to say everything.” – Dee N.

“Don’t let perfect be the enemy of done.” Doug S.

“Be authentically, unapologetically you all the time.” – Melissia P.

“Enjoy each day.” – Michael H

“Remember the Golden Rule.” – Michael M. and Jay T.

“If nothing changes, nothing changes.” – Eric B

“Don’t be an asshole.” – Cliff H.

“Never quit.” – Brian B.

And probably something you’d expect to see here…

As you get ready to tackle this new week, just remember…

The people with the best advice are usually the ones who have been through the most
