Monday Morning Match is a simple post – maybe a quote, inspirational story or idea – intended to spark some motivation inside each of you so your week gets off to a fantastic start on Monday morning.

This weekend, we had two major milestones in our household. My son Ryan celebrated his 18th birthday on Saturday and last night, we had our final high school sports banquet ever as Ryan’s golf season came to an end. At times it seems like it was just yesterday that we were rocking him to sleep or bringing him out to the golf course to swing a club that was much-to-big for his body. Other days I feel like those memories could be from a hundred years ago.

As my little boy becomes a young man, I thought I’d share some of my favorite insights from one of my treasured “books” that sits on my shelf in my home office – Really Important Stuff My Kids Have Taught Me by Cynthia Copeland Lewis. These are true if you’re a kid and still make sense for the grown-ups…maybe even more sense as the days with a kid in the house grow shorter.

Look at the footprints you’ve made.

More is not always better.

Be nice to the lunch lady.

If you wait until you’re really sure, you’ll never take off the training wheels.

Where you’re going is more important than where you stand.

As soon as you can walk you never want to crawl again.

While you’re standing there deciding whether or not to get your net, the butterfly is flying away.

Every piece of the puzzle that doesn’t fit gets you closer to the one that does.

When you’re lost, it’s better to stand still than to follow the wrong path.

You can make your crystal ball say whatever you want it to.

As soon as you understand two times four, you can’t believe there was a time you didn’t understand it.

You can’t ask to start over just because you’re losing the game.

If you want to find a new hideout in the woods, you’ll have to leave the trail.

The golf season is done and now my boy is 18. Next up is high school graduation and then the proverbial nest will be empty. I’m sure you have things in your life that are moving quickly too. Parents literally aging in front of your eyes and children becoming parents. Clients you sold a house to a few years ago calling you to help them sell it and find something bigger. Your team might be growing or perhaps you’re looking forward to slowing down and enjoying life a little more.

Don’t blink because it seems that life moves faster when your eyes are shut, even for that split second. I guess if we stay focused on trying to build relationships, solve problems and have fun, we really won’t miss too much.

At least, that’s what I’d like to believe.
