The brochure that came inside the box with the parts was titled “Easy Connect Instructions.” It was a
What if the spaghetti bowl of cables running along the joists in our basement didn’t connect? What if the phone lines weren’t working properly. How would I explain to my family that Dad wasn’t smart enough to follow “Easy Instructions” and that’s why we won’t be able to use our phones, laptops, or TV for the next few days.
I tried to remain calm and carefully read each step on the brochure. When that was done, I called the automated phone system to activate the system. I patiently navigated the phone tree until I was greeted by Janelle at the other end. After some brief ID questions, I was ready to see if I was ready to receive my Junior WiFi Installer badge.
“Mr. Carpenter,” asked Janelle, “Would you please try to connect to the WiFi network listed on the back of the router?”
As I clicked and scrolled, I was excited to see the network appear on the list of options. I quietly said to Janelle, “Oh my Janelle, I think I might have done it correctly. Hold on.” I entered the password and held my breath. A momentary pause segued into that relief-filled moment when you see the half-rainbow icon signifying that I had WiFi! Hallelujah! That pit in my stomach was quickly replaced with a little bit of pride that I did it. Even Janelle laughed and said, “Good job Sean. You did it!”
