Monday Morning Match is a quick post – maybe a quote, inspirational story or idea – intended to spark some motivation inside each of you so your week gets off to a fantastic start on Monday morning.

Yesterday was a good day. It was one of the first days here in central Ohio that we actually got to enjoy spring, which has been a long-time coming. The morning was brisk but it quickly warmed up and by mid-afternoon, the sun was shining and people were enjoying 72-degree temperatures and finding any reason they could to be outside.

Good Play

One of my buddies from my college days was in town for business so I invited him to join me for a round of golf. We were the first group to tee off (always an awesome experience for avid golfers) and played with my son, Ryan, and younger brother, Kevin. Even though it’s early in the season, the course is in great shape and the greens were rolling nicely. That might explain why my short game was so strong and helped contribute to a low score of 73.

Good Day

My friend Matt Corey is the Chief Marketing Officer for the PGA Tour Superstore company based in Atlanta. I’ve known Matt since we were pledge class brothers in our fraternity at the University of Florida. Matt was here in Columbus to oversee a commercial shoot with PGA star Jason Day. Day and his son Dash will be featured in a special Father’s Day spot that will air on major networks and The Golf Channel, as well as several online spots, focused on the Australian golfer and his family that call the Columbus area home.

Matt invited me and my family out to watch the shooting of the commercial as well as a chance to meet Jason in between shots. As a long time golfer and someone who has worked in the golf business, meeting professionals is nothing new, but in casual settings is much cooler than passing them in the pro shop or on the course.

Jason was extremely genuine and very respectful of every crew member on the set (filmed at the exclusive Double Eagle Golf Club in Galena, Ohio) and was having a blast shooting various scenes with Dash, his almost 6-year-old son, and Lucy, his 2-year-old daughter. In between shoots, he posed for some photos with us and chatted about his upcoming playing schedule as well as some insights for my brother on a possible trip to his homeland of Australia.

Here is the last Father’s Day commercial that Jason and Dash made a few years ago. I can’t want to see how this year’s version comes out. I think people will really like it and I know we’ll have some secret insights into how it was really created. I’m also going to go on record here on my blog and say I will be cheering for Jason (and Dash) to be hoisting the US Open trophy on Father’s Day at Shinnecock Hills on Long Island, New York. It would be perfect finish to the story.

Good Che

For the last 106 weeks, I have co-hosted a podcast with friends Bill Risser and Todd Meininger. It’s called The STARE Down (Sports Talk and Real Estate) and started as a fan-boy reaction to Risser’s outstanding podcast called The Real Estate Sessions. A loyal listener to Bill’s show, one day I suggested that Bill should do a sports podcast. He stated “I will if you co-host it with me” and more than 2 years later, we still talk every week about what’s going on in the world of sports. Todd (another one of my fraternity brothers) has been on the show for over a year after being a loyal listener.

So as a beer-drinking, sports fan with a good sense of humor*, it should come as no surprise that while in Portland last week enjoying some local craft beers, I talked to some strangers at one of the breweries I visited. Che Brewer was sporting a Portland Trailblazers jersey so I naturally struck up a conversation about my first visit to The City of Roses, beer, and sports. (I talked about Che in last week’s Monday Morning Match)

I suggested Che check out The STARE Down and if he liked what he heard, he should join our conversation and be our official “NBA Consultant” for the podcast. Che listened and reached back out to me to say he would love to join us for a few virtual beers and share his insights and knowledge of the NBA as well as other sports. Last night, Che was outstanding in his podcast debut and hopefully will be joining us for upcoming shows throughout the NBA playoffs and maybe longer.

What’s Going to Be Good About Your Week Ahead?

Yesterday I was able to check all the boxes of my philosophy; build relationships, solve problems, and have fun. What is on your agenda this week to check some boxes? Can you get re-acquainted with an old friend or client and catch up on old-time or create some new memories? Will you help people get engaged in something new, or watch something begin to take shape that will be impactful in no time all? What, where or with who will you have some fun with this week?

Whatever you get into this week, I hope you play well, experience new things and connect with some new friends.
