I was in Miami last week at Coldwell Banker’s Gen Blue Experience – a gathering of 3000+ agents, brokers, owners and affiliates from around the globe. Late one night my roommate for the week and I ordered room service at the Ritz Carlton. When the guy brought me my food, I asked him if he was a local guy.

He replied “Yes sir, but I went to college out of state.”

“Where did you go?” I inquired.

“I went to Mississippi State. It’s in a small town called Starkville. Ever heard of it?”

“Are you kidding? I’m a Gator but I certainly know Starkville. Ever been to Little Dooey’s? I replied.

He stood there with his mouth agape. “How do you know about Little Dooey’s?”

“Everyone knows about Little Dooey’s” I said with a smile.

He laughed and walked to the door. I shouted “Thanks buddy. Hail State.”

I had left earlier the next day but when my roommate got back to the room that night there was a plate of Gator cupcakes and this hand-written note waiting for me…

How cool is that? Thanks Davonne for your kind gesture and excellent customer service touch.

I’m convinced we all have something in common…if we simply listen for what it is. It might take a few questions to uncover it but the best salespeople are the best question-askers. The simple trick is actually listening to the answers.
