Monday Morning Match is a quick post – maybe a quote, inspirational story or idea – intended to spark some motivation inside each of you so your week gets off to a fantastic start on Monday morning.
We’re goin’ hoppin’, we’re goin’ hoppin’ today
Where things are poppin’ the Philadelphia way
We’re gonna drop in on all the music they play
On the bandstand (bandstand)We’re goin’ swingin’, we’re gonna swing in the crowdAnd we’ll be clingin’ and floatin’ high as a cloudThe phones are ringin’, my mom and dad are so proudI’m on bandstand (bandstand)And I’ll jump and hey, I may even show ’em my handstandBecause I’m on, because I’m on the American bandstandWhen we dance real slow I’ll show all the guys in the grandstandWhat a swinger I am, I am on American bandstand– Barry Manilow, Bandstand Boogie (1975)
Barry Manilow paid tribute to the iconic American Bandstand in his 1975 song Bandstand Boogie. On this date (Sept. 5th), 12 years later in 1987 American Bandstand was cancelled. While the show went into syndication and actually aired for two more years, the 30 year run of the classic music and pop culture variety show decided to end it’s run…and sadly, fan favorite host Dick Clark didn’t even make it until the end of the show. Instead, he was replaced by comedian David Hirsch.
What Are You Listening To?
Of course by 1987, American Bandstand was facing competition from upstarts MTV and VH1 so it was evident that the public still demanded music and entertainment but they just wanted it delivered in a different, “newer” way. Dick Clark didn’t become any less relevant, he just had to find a new way of reaching the ever-changing audience. His hosting days would continue but his genre changed from music to game shows to TV’s Bloopers and Practical Jokes. Undoubtedly everyone reading this spent at least one New Year’s Eve with Dick Clark “rockin’ in the new year”, right?
Do music videos still capture some people’s attention? Sure, but most music fans are instead listening on iTunes via ear buds, jamming via Beats headphones and Spotify or Pandora or streaming live concerts on their mobile devices instead of waiting for American Bandstand or listening for Kasey Kasem’s American Top 40. The world is changing. Are you?
Old School vs. New School in Real Estate
The great news is “old school” still works. Being active in your community, kid’s (or grand kid’s schools) churches, neighborhoods, local charities, country clubs, barber shops or hair salons, gyms or local pubs is still a great way to build relationships, solve problems and have fun. But don’t be so myopic that you don’t see the new generation of sales people out there connecting with people on-line and via the technology tools and devices that are at our fingertips.
The most successful Realtors and sales people these days will understand that a healthy blend of the old school techniques which bring you face-to-face with clients and customers along with the “new school” technologies of social media, video and other electronic communications are going to put you in more positions to convert leads into listings or sales.
Don’t be satisfied with the “bandstand” if you’re looking to take your business into the future and serve the next generation of buyers. Instead, fire up the “bandwagon” and start leveraging all the tools and systems to put your name or face in front of more people – both in person and virtually through all the channels available.
And now we’re hoppin
And we’ll be hoppin all day
When things are poppin
The philadelphia way
And you can drop in
On all the music they play
On the Bandstand

Hmm it seems like your site ate my first comment (it was super long) so
I guess I’ll just sum it up what I had written and say,
I’m thoroughly enjoying your blog. I too am an aspiring blog writer but I’m
still new to the whole thing. Do you have any recommendations
for novice blog writers? I’d genuinely appreciate it.
