I like to encourage people in a real estate career to “live your life and let real estate happen in the cracks.”

When you’re active in your kid’s schools, you’ll get business from your kids schools. When you’re active in your church, synagogue or house of worship, you’ll get business from your church, synagogue or house of worship. When you’re active in your local charity, community or neighborhood you just might earn business from your local charity, community or neighborhood.

Don’t be active in these organizations just to get business from them because people will see right through that. Be active in them because you enjoy it, like helping others or just want to share a skill, talent or passion.

Rarely will you meet someone who “lives real estate” and “fits their life (kids, grand kids, spouse/partner, health) in the cracks.” I’ve seen people try but usually they end up sucking at both.

Give yourself permission to be a parent, spouse or active member of your community. Don’t apologize for taking a day off. Never think that every call, text or email from your clients are urgent AND important. In most cases they are rarely both and more often than not, either.

Live your life

Go out and build relationships, solve problems and have fun. You can (and should) do that with or without your salesperson hat on. You’ll be surprised at how much is out there waiting in the cracks.
