Monday Morning Match is a quick post – maybe a quote, inspirational story or idea – intended to spark some motivation inside each of you so your week gets off to a fantastic start on Monday morning.

Career Day

7760364968_b3af284875_zIt’s a thought we all had when we were younger. Something would come along and we’d make a decision about our future career. It usually started as something heroic; a fireman, a policeman or a soldier. Maybe yours was something in sports or music. Who didn’t, at some point in their life, want to be an “All Star” or a “Rock Star.”

After we grow up a little bit we start to see other occupations that inspire us or intrigue us and make us want to learn more. Maybe it’s a school teacher or a coach who believes in us and makes us want to follow in their footsteps. Perhaps we see the impact someone has on their clients or community and we aspire to do the same. Some of us don’t want to follow in anyone’s shadow so we become entrepreneurs and create or build something new.

There are no statistics to turn to but there are probably more people doing something different than what they wanted to do when they were little. I remember as a child I had no interest in doing what my father did for a living and, while I greatly respected my grandfather, I surely never wanted to carry on the life of a salesman like him. Yet life has a funny way of taking you places you never expected but are probably meant to be. I was proud to be a salesman and now I am thrilled I get to teach people how to be salespeople. I feel I’m exactly where I am meant to be right now.

What do you want to be when you grow up?

I saw this video from the team at UPS about a little boy named Carson who wants to be a UPS delivery driver when he grows up. Who knows…maybe Carson will be a driver someday or maybe he’ll hold a role even higher in the company? Maybe he’ll turn into a doctor or a lawyer or a real estate agent or a teacher. I just think it’s neat that he doesn’t have to make the decision today.

What is it you want to be when you grow up? If you’re not doing it right now, what needs to happen today to make it that much more of a reality? Who can you help reach their “dream job”? If you’re already doing what you love, when was the last time you reached out to thank the person who helped you along the way?

Go out and work this week with the passion and excitement that Carson has each day. Put on your “uniform” and get ready to deliver amazing experiences.

It all starts by building relationships, solving problems and having fun.

Great post, you simple must watch the video, it brought tears of joy to my eyes. When I grow up, perhaps this year, I want to be surrounded by evidence of a beautiful life, from scenery, flowers, music etc.
Thanks Carp.

I am a full-time writer, so I have the job I dreamed about as a child. I didn’t think I’d become a journalist, but as a young adult, I found that this style of writing suited me. I still dream about writing creative material for a living. When I was a little girl, I sometimes imagined myself becoming a judge or an attorney, because our housekeeper always watched “Divorce Court” while she ironed the clothes.
