Monday Morning Match is a simple post – maybe a quote, inspirational story or idea – intended to spark some motivation inside each of you so your week gets off to a fantastic start on Monday morning.
Mentor – (noun) An experienced and trusted adviser
This week I will help facilitate the Certified Real Estate Mentor program at the Columbus REALTORS, my home association here in Central Ohio. It’s a program that was a vision of former Board President and friend, Mic Gordon and the concept was further created by a small task force of individuals to explore educational opportunities for members who want to become mentors or improve their mentoring skills. It’s a great program and I have been honored to be the program facilitator for three previous sessions. Graduates earn the CREM designation, a local recognition that, as of now, is only offered by the Columbus REALTORS.
The course is delivered over two days and there are 5 sections with lots of interactive group discussions and activities as well as some homework assignments before session two. As with most designation courses, the true learning is not in the lecture or materials delivered in the student workbooks, it comes from the discussions among participants and the self-discovery that occurs during the conversations and exercises throughout the program. The sections covered include;
- The Real Estate Mentor Mindset
- Crafting Your Mentorship Style
- The Mentorship Toolkit
- The Art of Motivation
- Making Mentorship Real
A mentor really has many different roles or duties as part of their special relationship with their mentees; They are part leader, helping to chart a path to success. They are part coach, advising on systems and helping create accountability. They are part teacher, instructing on models and central topics needed for day to day actions and desired results. They are a role model, walking the walk and leading by example.
As you read through those components of a mentor, who comes to mind in your life and career? Was there someone in a leadership position along the way that has impacted who you are today? Have you had a coach, in little league, school sports or in your business career that has helped you elevate to new levels? What teacher has been instrumental in making you want to learn more? Who is that role model that you strive to make proud or emulate for people you might have the opportunity someday to guide and mentor? Every time I get to facilitate this program, I am reminded of the many mentors who have touched my life at some point. I’ll have many of them in my mind and heart over the next few days and be forever appreciative of their leadership, coaching, teaching, and impact as a role model.
Maybe even more impactful might be for you to think who might answer the questions above with your name? Who have you helped see the hope they might have inside?
Even if you won’t be in my workshop this week, you have an opportunity to become a better mentor to someone this week. Go lead, teach, coach, and model the behaviors and actions that your customers, clients, and community desire. Make this week about working hard to become better than you were last week.
Go build relationships, solve problems, and have fun.
